Treadmill Vs. Elliptical Machine
Ever since the treadmill was introduced to the world in the 1960′s it took workouts to a whole new level. That was until the elliptical trainer was introduced in the 1990′s. Although they are both used for indoor aerobic exercises and cardiovascular workouts, the question is how do they really stack up against each other in performance.
The elliptical trainer is considered to be minimal impact exercise machine with an intermediate range of leg motion, falling in the range between a treadmill and a stationary bicycle. It is considered minimal impact because when using the machine your feet never come off the pedals eliminating the impact on the ground. These machines work great for someone with knee or joint disorders.
Whether the home personal treadmill or the commercial treadmill is considered to be a low to high impact exercise machine with a full range motion for the legs. The high impact workout helps strengthen both bones and muscles. Treadmills offer the same benefits as jogging or walking outside on a regular basis.
Although the elliptical trainer seems to be the ideal choice for seniors and for those that are using exercise as a form of physical therapy, they do not offer the level of exercise needed for cross country training, marathon running or even extreme workouts. For a low impact workout treadmills can be set to a low resistance level and just walked on, increasing the speed and resistance as needed. Therefore a treadmill offers both low and high impact workouts while the elliptical trainer does not.
